Most textbooks "assume" that there is a teacher standing in front of the class to explain the material and are by design "teacher-dependent". Homeschoolers working one-on-one with their children have consistently produced far better results than the age-segregated classroom has produced, but that success can be stunted if the parent does not have the background to properly teach the concepts, or has limited time because of work schedules.
In many homes, for example, Dad is the algebra teacher, but that means math has to wait until after supper, which often conflicts with other activities such as church, ballet or ball practice. (The number of activities that could be inserted here is endless.) Not to mention that the evening is the normal time with family and friends. The resulting gaps between new concepts being introduced and practiced make it hard for students to truly master the necessary concepts, particularly in courses like algebra.
